“Your grandpa make that for you?” Karolina shriek laughs, smile wild between the cracks of wire in the way Victor’s new arm snaps away from her, clenches up wildly, useless. She took down Falcon the day before, even at dusk she’s supercharged enough to drop steel, and Victor’s the only air support left with Carol grounded.
It’s clear she hasn’t been listening to herself, her voice a comfortable litany of sounds to go with the visuals that blur most of her vision with sunspots of the future. He’ll reason her out of it at their height, even with one sputtering arm.
“You’re my best friend,” he tries, side burning where her last strike hit. For a shining moment Victor thinks that got through to her, made her redirect the next shot, until he follows it, over his shoulder, into Nathan’s chest.
Close enough for a sunburn, Karolina coos, “Hey, isn’t that how your mom died?” And it’s suddenly as clear as whatever sunrise Karolina never got enough of, as the most cloudless day the Runaways spent in the desert, goofing off, being kids. It’s as open and as plain as the rift between the life Victor had before they showed up at East LA High and the life he has now that he will kill Karolina.
“Stop cryin, would you,” Nathan laughs later, gun tossed aside when the bullets were spent, useless, and Victor in his arms, equally useless in this fight now too. “Hulk’s staring.”
