But it’s unlikely, right, because as far as he knows Wertham isn’t a real city, unless it’s like an informal suburb name, or like a borough. Shit, that’s possible, isn't it? Victor takes a few quick mental notes to check that up when he gets off the phone.
“I guess,” Karolina replies, slowly, measured to cause the least amount of upset to her listener. “Have you tried looking for Lydia?”
He sneers, “Right, I’ll just look for a modern day Jane Austen character, that makes complete sense.”
“Don’t be sassy with me!” she snaps back, voice distant over the light-years between them. “You’re a cyborg and I’m an alien, anything is possible.” He shrugs, switching the phone to his other shoulder. He’s opening his laptop to check this theory. It’s possible Wertham is spelled weird too, British-isms and all. Worth another look.
He can practically hear Karolina chewing her lip. “Say what you wanna say,” he sighs, shifting the phone to his other shoulder.
“Are you worried if you look and she’s not-” No, that’s not it, he assures her as the words keep tumbling from the Majesdanian. “It just seems like you’re focusing a lot on Nathan instead of other people we met there.” Victor scoffs.
“I’m not.” Her silence isn’t exactly one of firm belief and trust. “K, I’m not. It’s just. The Avengers are recruiting, so I thought- Oh! The Avengers are recruiting! You could join!”
“Uh huh,” she hums thoughtfully, “I've got my hands full out here. Maaaaaybeeee... Rictor wants to join the Avengers.” He can hear her smug little grin too.
“Very funny,” he hisses, cupping his hand around the mouthpiece, as if there was anyone in the apartment to hear. Karolina laughs sweetly.
“Oh, relax! It wouldn’t hurt you to date again, right?”
“I wouldn’t call that dating,” Victor grimaces, slinking farther into his seat. “I just- it’s not like I have a ton of friends in New York.” Sympathetic noises from the team mom! What about Chase? Victor’s groan is answer enough. His hands hover over the keyboard, the halted search for a English neighborhood.
“I’m sorry you’re not making friends,” Karolina sighs. “New York sounds lonely. It’d be nice if you had someone like Xavin. Promise me you’ll just check for Lydia.” Victor starts to suggest she could introduce him to a Skrull, but Xavin cuts across the line furiously, as if any of her kin would deign to date an appliance.
