“Like Genosha,” Rictor says at last, tone flat, eyebrows raised.
“Not.. exactly,” Victor admits. He sits up a little more, leg tucked underneath himself. “I mean, there were normal people there too. We didn’t all have powers, it wasn’t like an internment camp or something.”
“Sounds a lot like it,” Julio taps the ash from the end of his cigarette, leaning back against the windshield. Victor stays sitting up, trying to reconcile the past. It’s been a while since he blinked back into existence in the only universe he knew before fact and fiction blurred together, where you’d see Sherlock Holmes and a member of the Golden Girls browsing the produce aisle at the grocery store. Where you’d become your greatest fear and a cat version of yourself in the same fiscal year. The pther Runaways who did show up in sporadically New Moore didn’t remember it, the years never happened for them, time was repetitious and Victor celebrated the same birthdays twice before he realized there was never going to be a smooth transition from New Moore to this world. By then the team was disjointed, torn up over more conflicts that time and space.
Julio takes a long drag of smoke before asking, “Not here?”
“No,” Victor mumbles, adding after a beat, “Well, the island of New Moore does exist, sure, but it’s been missing for awhile so it’s maybe not the same thing? I don’t know.” He looks back and Rictor’s attention is right back at him, smiling, leering, long enough Vic can feel his ears burn. “Okay, you’re fucking with me on purpose.”
“No,” he says smoothly, gesturing for Victor to lean back and join him. “This is very interesting.”
“Sure,” Victor scoffs, turning away, trying to wipe the smile off his face from the cheesy way Rictor is reclined.
“Sure,” he echoes, flicking the cigarette aside. “I’m genuinely interested in asking you about the mutant prison that accidentally kidnapped a cyborg with horrible aim.”
Victor gapes back at him, “You told me I was a good shot!”
“I’ll tell you a lot of things,” Rictor murmurs, reaching out for him. Victor pulls back slower and slower each time, but he’s never been great at turning away people away. The night after they bust up a third cartel, Julio shoves him into the backseat of the car and Victor’s done fighting it. Not hating it is nerve wracking enough, as is the complete mood killer thought that he really wishes Nathan was there instead.
As a friend, obviously. Nathan’s not gay, Victor reminds himself, scrubbing a hand over his face. Although you might be.
