Title: blackening the time
Fandom:
indesolution, au revolution-verse or dystopia.
Characters: cordelia chase, akira udou, others.
Akira doesn't live with them. Charlie isn't sure where he stays the other days. Warren talks about how the kid might betray them to the cops that are still left. Charlie isn't one hundred percent sure they should trust him yet, but he remembers the way Akira's face shifts when they talk about Parkman. Nah, he tells Mears. He's not going to the police. There's nowhere for anybody to go if they're against Kennit, except a cold cell or a warm place under the ground.
Akira is in his room by the time Charlie climbed the last flight of stairs.
"Nice limp," he smirks after Charlie's back. Everyone is Babylon is hearing about how Cordelia Chase went on a rampage in Kennit's manor and got off with just a bloody nose. They aren't ready to kill her, Charlie keeps telling people. Kennit hasn't questioned it yet, but if the opportunity arises again- Well. He's a great man, but Kennit's not all that generous.
"You're lucky he's not here," he'd spat to the girl with the crossbow.
"Really?” Cordelia had chirped, crouched over him while he bled on the oriental rug. "I'd say you're the lucky one. 'Cause if Kennit was here, one of these would go right between his eyes." Then she shot Charlie's other leg. Cordelia isn't so generous either.
Axel asks about girls and the Discipline Committee and all the other useless stuff well into the fragmentation of their society. It's like nothing is happening for him, so Roxas doesn't know how to bring it up. All that time Sora, Kairi and Riku are preparing a battle, but no one's asked him to join in. The most involvement they got was when Near sent Naminé away. She came to live with Roxas, and for all his grudges, Axel moved in along with the witch. But nothing more after that.
"They still think I'm a bad guy." Roxas realizes at last. Axel pauses their video game and Naminé halts her brush. "That's why they haven't asked for my help."
"You're not a bad person." Naminé’s voice cuts in above Axel's low agreement, but he raises his voice to counter her.
"Who cares! They're the ones with the hearts," Axel points out and turns back to the TV. "They can use 'em to bleed all over this problem." Roxas won't let it go. Don't you want to protect your new world, your new life? Axel says nothing. You can't just sit around, you know. You helped Sora before-- Wrong. The controller clatters to the ground and Axel digs his fingers into the blonde's arms. Wrong. You were in there, he reminds Roxas. That was Sora and you. "You're here now," he breathes. "So I've got no business out there."
The Meisters follow the mission objective. Even though the situation is in desperate need of Gundam involvement, they have to make due with the resources they have. Violent conflict has to be ended by any means necessary, so Sumeragi makes plans for them to storm the hideout.
Weeks later, Tieria sits half disassembled in Warren's workshop. Despite various tinkerings, his mental processes are still functioning. Warren removes his voice box, tired of hearing Tieria's questions about his loser boyfriend Kennit killed. Go figure- Someone else is making sophisticated robots with hardened relationship loyalties. "The new seasons of Gundam are such jokes," he grins to Andrew.
Jonathan couldn't have been asleep for ten minutes when he starts awake again. For a second he thinks it was just his usual nerves, or the reaction from mixing second hand medications-- the hospital ran out of anti-depressants pretty fast after the fighting started. Eventually though, he hears movement across the room and notes the absence of a body near him.
"Cordelia?" he squints through the darkness, seeing the blurred shape struggle across the room. Realizing she was dressing, Jonathan drops his eyes fast, focusing on untangling himself from the bed sheets. "What's up?"
"We don't have a lot of time." Her voice cuts through the night and it's that tone that, without the rest of the story, Jonathan already knows what's wrong. "The detective? The dark haired one. They're gonna poison him. I um- I wrote the address down and I know what the cake looks like. Get up- if we hurry we'll have another-"
He swallows hard. "Cordelia, that was months ago."
This happens a lot. It started when she came into Rule 42 looking for Faith two weeks after Vilma killed her. Doctor Tam explained that her visions overlap with her concept of reality. So remembering what happened in the past sometimes seems like a vision - or vice versa. Sometimes she'll see a person being attacked and not know if it's happened before or if it’s going to happen later. The pressure on her brain makes it so there is the sensation of a vision even in the absence of actual precognition activity. Similar things happened with River, Simon added sadly, standing in the empty hospital hallway with Jonathan. Doctor Cox is with Cordelia, but there's no way he can explain what she's going through-
"But that's good," Jonathan gulps. "I mean. Cordelia doesn't need to know the bad news. She has to save the world, s-so she can't worry about herself. That's my job."
Ichigo protects the civilian section of the city, so no one on either side goes after him. It’s nothing noble, it’s just the closest to keeping the world balanced as they can get. Rukia tells him about Rube Sofer and his fellow grim reapers and they silently imagine the winter that awaits them too- others with similar powers. For all that he hates it, Ichigo keeps his head low. Most of the time he and Rukia just try and keep the fighting from expanding into their area or putting out fires.
But people get more desperate, and attacks in that inner circle keep increasing. Ichigo gets tired of seeing kids getting killed, and the Hollow gets louder in his head each time he finds the culprit. Eventually, he can't pull the mask off again. He tells Rukia, struggling between two sides of himself, "You have to kill me." It's the same as when he was alive; He has no idea how much things hurt Rukia, even when he does it himself.
She explains how the best men die with their comrades, and their hearts stay with their friends forever, living along inside of them. "Cool," Ichigo grins, one eye still black with the Hollow within him. Her hand feels small under his, around the blade imbedded in his stomach.
Akira hit Charlie so hard he feels a tooth shake loose and slip down his throat with a gag. He's already broken one arm, but Akira doesn't understand basic human boundaries. Not that Charlie was the expert there, but it's been a long time since he let a fight get this far. Akira brings foot down and Charlie sputters blood as his ribs crumple beneath it.
"Georgia Lass," Akira keeps saying. It's all hypocritical bullshit, weren't they just talking about slitting Rube from ear to ear last week? But that dumb girl's name, it's all he can say with each pounding fist. Charlie can't decide if he doesn't say George because the real name's more girly, or just because Akira never met the bitch.
"I'm not here to help you rape and kill girls." He hauls Charlie up by his collar and strikes him back down. "You sick fuck."
"Yeah?" Charlie chokes, bruises pressed fresh to the hardwood. "What are you here for then?" Akira stamps down hard on Charlie's bad hand and the flash of pain reminds him. The sky.
"I'm going crazy aren't I?" Cordelia asks a few days before the proposal. Jonathan's even holding a hand of hers in his- just because he's changing the bandages on her burns. She couldn't get into the high security prison on this attempt, but she managed to bomb out half of the barracks. Next time they'll bust out Madame Karate. She was formulating an attack on the civilian sector to distract them when Jonathan, with wide horrified eyes, reminds her that they don't hurt innocent people. And that someone blew up that food shelter last week. She asks the question again with unfamiliar and unsure eyes.
"You aren't crazy," Jonathan replied on a mumble, and rubbing the antiseptic and flinching when she does.
"I guess it's better than being dead!" She smiles mirthlessly and squeezes his hand. Not much better, Jonathan tells himself silently, and gets the idea from her shaking fingers against his.
